The History You Must Know

Esakki Karvannan Managing Director

One such story belongs to Esakki Karvannan — a man who rose from a rural village, faced exile, survived in one of the toughest cities in the world, built a successful logistics empire, and yet continues to chase the same dream he had as a child: cinema. Esakki Karvannan was born in Kumarapuram – Kanyakumari, a small village near the border of Tirunelveli. From a young age, he was different. Cinema fascinated him. Stories lived inside his imagination. He constantly thought beyond the ordinary world around him. Academics, however, were not his strength. School education never truly connected with him, and life took turns that were far from his control.

Our first film was Muthal Kanave, starring Vikranth in one of his early roles and introducing actress Honey Rose. Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office. The financial loss even affected his logistics business. Yet he refused to stop. He produced another film: Athe Neram Athe Idam, starring Jai (actor). The film introduced Premgi Amaren as a music director, and the song “Athu Oru Kaalam” became a major hit. But the film itself did not succeed commercially. Once again, he returned to business to recover the losses.

He directed and produced the film Pagiri and Pettikadai with Actor Samuthirkani. The film performed moderately and received attention for its themes. Later, he directed: Tamizh Kudimagan, starring Cheran and Paramasivan Fathima, starring Vemal, Both films explored strong political and social ideas.

Even after more than 21 years in cinema, Esakki Karvannan has not yet experienced a major commercial success. After building his life from scratch in business, cinema repeatedly pushed him back to financial zero. Yet he continues. Because for him, cinema is not business. It is passion.

During one of the toughest phases of his life, he made a practical decision. With the support of his brother, he started a logistics and transport business. What began as a survival move slowly grew into something extraordinary. Over time, the company expanded across India, handling logistics for major Home appliances brands.

The business eventually employed around 200 workers. At one point, the company even achieved a remarkable logistics record — delivering nearly 5000 televisions across India in a single day. The boy who once delivered newspapers had now become a millionaire businessman. But success in business did not erase his first dream.

One day, Esakki Karvannan walked into the Tamil Film Directors Association with a unique request. He said: “Give me a director. I want to produce a film.” In cinema history, producers usually wait for directors to approach them. But here was a man actively searching for someone to make a film. Thus began his journey as a film producer. Pakka Mass Moment
